MEPs mobilised against fraudulent platforms

Press release

Strasburg, Wednesday 26 November 2025

A first victory.

This noon, the European Parliament adopted a joint resolution by the S&D, Renew, EPP and Greens/EFA groups calling on the European Commission on the urgency of protecting European consumers from the practices of certain e-commerce platforms.

This vote affirms one thing: the impunity of e-commerce platforms is over.

The sale of child-like sex dolls and weapons on the Shein and AliExpress platforms has shed light on the problem. Today, all of Europe realises the danger posed by these online platforms and the 12 million packages they bring into our continent every day

While the non-compliance of products is also massive, this resolution makes a clear request to the European Commission to enforce our rules and impose dissuasive penalties.

Today, Parliament called for platforms to be held accountable for product safety and compliance, the mandatory appointment of a legally and financially responsible representative within the EU, and transparency in recommender algorithms to put an end to manipulative online sales practices.

As the resolution points out: ‘Shein is not an isolated case’.  AliExpress, Temu, Joom, Wish, eBay... continue to threaten the health and safety of consumers through their complacency with illegal and dangerous products and the systematic circumvention of our standards. European jobs, factories and SMEs are paying a heavy price for this deadly model and unfair competition.

To continue the mobilisation, we, Members of the European Parliament involved in the fight against the abuses of e-commerce, met yesterday in a trans-partisan and transnational working group.

Several priorities emerged from this first exchange, shared by the Members present and represented:

  • The rigorous enforcement of existing legislation, including the Digital Services Act (DSA) by the European Commission, and the imposition of firm, swift, and exemplary sanctions—up to and including market suspension—against those who repeatedly violate EU law.
  • Support for the European customs reform, the abolition of customs clearance of small parcels as early as 2026 and harmonised taxation to strengthen customs.
  • Combating the import of products from forced labour, which endanger the health of workers or destroy the planet
  • Supporting local, ethical, environmentally friendly and consumer-friendly production models.

Investigations are underway against several platforms, but their slow pace is hindering the imposition of sanctions. MEPs plan to keep pressure on the Commission to speed up these investigations and decisions, particularly through a series of hearings.

Commission President Von der Leyen must act without delay to protect European citizens, our jobs, our businesses and our industries.
